Kanashimi yo Konnichi wa

is the fifth single by Japanese pop singer Yuki Saito. It was released March 21, 1986 by Canyon Records together with . It was ranked #3 on the Oricon charts and #2 on The Best Ten chart, as well as ranked #19 overall for single sales in 1986 by Oricon.
The title song was used as the first opening theme for the anime television series ''Maison Ikkoku'', as well being used as an image song for a line of Shiseido hair care products. Multiple artists have released covers of "Kanashimi yo Konnichi wa". In November 2007, a rearranged "21st Century ver." of the single was released, which included multiple arrangements of four different songs.
==History==
"Kanashimi yo Konnichi wa" was released on March 21, 1986 as a 7-inch single vinyl record through Canyon Records. The single reached #3 on the Oricon charts, and #6 on The Best Ten chart. Additionally, it was ranked #19 by Oricon in overall sales for singles in 1986.〔 The site references ''Single Chart-Book Complete Edition 1968-2005'', by Oricon Entertainment. April 25, 2006. ISBN 4871310760 (ISBN 9784871310765).〕
The B-side release was "Ohikkoshi, Wasuremono". The title song had lyrics written by Yukinojō Mori, the music was composed by Kōji Tamaki and was arranged by Satoshi Takebe. Saito wrote the lyrics for the B-side, Toshio Kamei composed the music, and Takebe arranged the music.〔These individuals are all listed on the album cover as well as the label on the vinyl EP itself.〕
The title single was used as the first theme song for the 1986 Fuji TV anime television series ''Maison Ikkoku''. It was used in a total of 36 episodes (through episode 37, with the exception of episode 24 which had a different theme song). It was also used as an image song for the "Morning Fresh" line of shampoos and styling products from Shiseido.〔〔The cover of the single gives the following information just to the right of the title: CX-TV系放映「めそん一刻」主題歌 新星堂「モーニングフレッシュ」イメージ・ソング, which translates to "CX-TV Network televised ''Maison Ikkoku'', Shinseido 'Morning Fresh' image song".〕
The original single sold 289,000 copies. It was later rereleased as a mini CD single on April 29, 1988,〔 and rereleased as part of a ''21st Century ver.'' on November 28, 2007.〔
